Umbrella Companies

As a supply teacher you may find yourself employed by a number of different schools or agencies throughout the tax year, particularly if you’re opting for short term/day-to-day supply teaching work. This can often make it difficult for the Inland Revenue to decide just how much PAYE tax should be deducted from your wages and so there may be times when you are placed on a high rate emergency tax, the overpayments of which can be claimed back at a later date.

What is an Umbrella company?

An umbrella company is an intermediary that acts as your employer to process your PAYE, rather than the agency you work through. Working through an Umbrella company (as opposed to PAYE) allows umbrella workers, under some circumstances, to offset the cost of their travel and subsistence expenses both in getting to work and whilst at a school.

Claiming expenses pre-tax reduces an umbrella worker’s taxable gross salary and subsequently the amount of tax paid. On the whole, there is usually a 5 -10% difference in the rate of take home pay when using an Umbrella company rather than straight PAYE.

It is worth noting that Umbrella companies do charge fees for this service; however, your daily rate is still likely to be higher than if you opt for PAYE.

Presently we offer a choice of four of the most recognised companies in the education sector which were selected based on their:

  • Excellent compliance and service.
  • Ability to deliver a financial benefit to you.
  • Portability – these companies are commonly used throughout the education sector and therefore it is easier to move between agencies or work for more than one.

At the end of each working day in school you must fill in a timesheet to record the days you have worked so that we can pay you correctly. Ask at the main school office for someone to sign off your timesheet and then return it to us by fax: 020 7272 281 8400 or email: timesheets@astarteachers.com

Timesheets are processed on a weekly basis and must be received by A* Star Teachers by 4pm on Friday in order for you to get paid.
It is your responsibility to ensure your timesheet is sent in correctly so please always keep a copy incase there is any problems.

Term Dates

Please contact us for an up to date list of this year's term dates. Some London schools have adopted slightly different term times to the standard term dates for the UK and it is therefore advisable to contact the individual school to confirm their term dates.

AWR (For Supply Teachers)

The Agency Worker Regulations (AWR) came into force October 1 2011, giving agency workers entitlement to the same basic employment and working conditions as if they had been recruited directly, if and when they complete a qualifying period of 12 weeks in the same job.

It is not retrospective and for those agency workers already on assignment, the 12 week qualifying period starts from October 1 2011.

We have been working with the REC legal team, DfE Quality Mark team, our payroll companies and IT support for a number of months to ensure a smooth start from October 1.

A key point to note with the AWR legislation is the agency worker needs to be paid what the hirer (school) would reasonably pay somebody as a permanent member of staff. It is not directly related to your qualifications and experience.

A*Star Teachers works to ensure that ALL our agency workers are paid at least what a permanent member of staff would be paid for the role.

We have the correct pay rates and systems in place to provide extremely robust best practice in meeting AWR compliance with minimum inconvenience to our teachers and schools.

In order to meet best practice in AWR Compliance we have made a small change to our timesheet.

  • Section 1 asks you to circle the Job Title which best suits the role the timesheet refers to.
  • Section 2 asks you to mark an X if you have worked for this school through another agency since October 1, 2011.

Full guidance can be found on the AWR website.

If you have any questions/concerns please email AWR@astarteachers.com (please include your contact number).

Please see bottom of website for AWR Timesheet.
