Selection Process

Our partner schools rely on A Star Teachers to provide high quality, and fully vetted, professionals to fill their vacancies. We take this responsibility very seriously, and that has build the trust and reputation our partner schools have had in us for more than 15 years.

Our selection process is designed to find the best teachers available:

1. Attract

We attract teachers through advertising internationally, both in print and from our own recruitment portal. We also make regular presentations at Teacher Training Colleges and Universities, planting the seeds for a successful future. We have a partnership with one of the largest teacher recruitment companies in Australia and the most popular teacher recruitment portal in Canada. Furthermore, we network and manage a referral scheme where teachers refer other teachers.

2. Screen

Our strict screening and security checks ensure that all our teachers are eligible and suitable to work in UK schools. We vet teachers thoroughly and decline applicants who fall short of our standards in any way. This step includes a thorough Safe Guarding process that exceeds the best practice standards set in ECM Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education (Jan 2007).

3. Profile

Applicants have to demonstrate in a face-to-face interview that they are professional, capable, enthusiastic and committed. We also professionally assess and profile every teacher’s ability, fluency, knowledge and understanding, planning and classroom management. Experience and highly qualified Head teachers and Inspectors are sent overseas on our behalf to carry out such interviews.

4. Match

Our profiling assists in more effective matching of teachers to vacancies. This stage is the first direct exposure of short-listed candidates to schools. A Star Teachers can arrange for the teacher to visit the to school or if they have been interviewed overseas, enable an additional direct phone interview for the headteacher with the candidate.

5. Induction

A*Star Teachers runs a comprehensive programme at the beginning of each term for new teachers. In addition, ‘twilight training’ is scheduled throughout the year. This free programme includes key areas such as national literacy, numeracy and curriculum standards, in addition to professionalism and behaviour management. Staff from A Star Teachers partner schools are welcome to attend.

6. Support

Our Professional Development Consultant provides support for our teachers at a classroom level and where required can assist in preparing the teacher and other eligible teachers from our partner schools to gain UK Qualified Teacher Status. Non-school support includes advice and assistance on accommodation, banking, tax and payroll, healthcare, work permits and, or course, the hectic social life. We offer guidance on cultural familiarisation, social networking, travel and generally playing hard.

7. Development

We develop and review individual professional development programmes continuously. These take into account feedback from the school, and a report is prepared for the headteacher. Additional in-service training is provided to teachers on top of the normal school professional development courses.

8. Appraise

Our professional consultants visit teachers in class to check planning, observe teaching and offer on-going constructive feedback against their personal objectives. Where necessary, they help the teacher compile a professional portfolio and prepare for the final QTS assessment.
